WISE Charter School

WISE Charter School exists to ensure the academic and social development of students while restoring the essence of family and community with an emphasis on academic excellence, cultural awareness, and responsible citizenship.

WISE Today

WISE Charter School was established in 2001.  We began with nine teachers serving approximately 100 students in grades K-3.  Today, we serve more than 300 students in grades K-7 and we maintain a staff of 23 teachers, education assistants, special education assistants, office staff, and kitchen staff.  In 2009, our school will expand to include eighth grade and will serve approximately 370 students.  To support this expansion, WISE is moving into the former Franklin Middle School building in North Minneapolis.

WISE Charter School is sponsored by the YMCA of Metropolitan Minneapolis and has always been proudly located on the North Side of Minneapolis.

Our Primary Population

  • Our student population is 99% African American.
  • 90% of our students qualify for free/reduced price lunch.
  • 38% have experienced housing transition within the past year.
  • While most students reside on the North Side of Minneapolis (45%), approximately 30% of our students do not live in Minneapolis.  WISE Charter School currently serves students and families from 16 communities in the Twin Cities metro area.

In addition to the YMCA of Greater Minneapolis, current WISE Charter School partners include the University of Minnesota, The Greater Twin Cities United Way, Hennepin County, NorthPoint Health and Wellness Center, AmeriCorps, Cargill Foundation, Minnesota Humanities Center, LarsonAllen LLP, The Medtronic Foundation, HealthPartners, and Minneapolis Urban League.
